Using speed and chaos, Colquitt wins softball home-opener
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County softball team managed just five hits, but scored in every inning using its speed to create chaos in an 11-5 victory over Cairo on Monday in the home-opener at Packer Park.
Colquitt’s girls are now 2-0 as they prepare for a doubleheader at Cook on Thursday and games against Lanier County and Wilcox County on Saturday in Cordele.
Coach Taylor Barber said his team was not as crisp as it was in the 13-6 season-opening victory at Bainbridge last Thursday, but was not about to find fault with his team’s performance.
“We are learning to celebrate everything,” he said. “As I told the parents, there are no bad wins.”
Cairo scored a pair of runs in the top of the first after the first two batters reached on a misplayed ball in the infield and a walk.
But junior Kamry Paulk, who started in the circle, gave up just one other run over the next four innings.
“I am proud of Kamry,” Barber said. “She struggled early, but ended up finding herself and did a really, really good job.”
Paulk walked three and struck out four.
And her performance in the circle allowed Barber to use freshman Allie Eure at shortstop.
“We welcomed her to the show a little and she did a great job,” Barber said. “She’s going to be a good player for us.”
Sophomore Lilah Thompson pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs, both of which were unearned.
The Lady Packers got 11 hits against Bainbridge, but showed they could manufacture runs against the Syrupmaids.
“I’m really pleased with our speed and our ability to run the bases,” Barber said. “Our kids are buying into what we want to do. We are going to have to cause some chaos and that’s what we have done.”
With Colquitt trailing 2-0, RaJayla McBride opened the bottom of the first with a double, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
McBride also walked twice and stole three bases in the game.
Rheygan Harrell has a pair of infield hits and also drew a base on balls.
Thompson followed Harrell’s first hit with an RBI double in the second inning that tied the game.
Colquitt took the lead in a three-run third in which Harrell had the only hit.
Peyton Arrington had the Lady Packers only other hit.
Thursday’s doubleheader in Adel will be the first time the two teams have played this season, although they have been scheduled to meet twice already.
The preseason scrimmage on July 29 at Packer Park was called off in the second inning because of bad weather.
What was to be the Lady Packers home-opener against Cook was called off because of Tropical Storm Debby.
The Lady Hornets took a 5-0 record into their Monday home game against Valdosta.
And while both Lanier County and Wilcox County are Class A programs, neither is likely to be a pushover.
Lanier was 24-4-1 last season; Wilcox was 20-9.
