Exhibit is only a part of Arts Center’s ‘HomeTown’ activities
This weekend marks the fourth week that “HomeTown Teams: How Sports Shape America” has been open at the Colquitt County Arts Center. The theme of the exhibition revolves around sports and teams in America. They are an unforgettable part of culture and community in towns all over the country. Sports reflect the American experience and have helped to shape our national character.
Saturday, April 22nd was “Opening Day” for the exhibit and what a great day it was! The “Opening Day” was hosted by the wonderful Moultrie Service League! Guests gathered to listen to the guest speaker, Colquitt County native and former Head Coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, Ray Goff, give a speech before our Mayor McIntosh cut the ribbon to the Vereen Gallery. After touring the exhibit guests were invited to enjoy hotdogs from Dog World and play giant yard games. All in all, it was a wonderful “Opening Day” and the exhibit has continued to be very well received and enjoyed by our community.
The celebration of “HomeTown Teams” did not end with the “Opening Day”! There has been a full schedule of events to celebrate the athletics in our community. The events began with a Panel Discussion on Sports Related Injuries at the Vereen Rehabilitation Center. The panel consisted of, Dr. Kent Posey (Neurologist), Jaclyn Donovan (Athletic Trainer), Britney Mobley and Scott Romanoski (Physical Therapists). This was a very interesting and informative evening for all those who attended. The discussion really delved into what the Vereen Rehabilitation Center does and the impact it has on athletics in all the surrounding areas and schools. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility in Moultrie.
On Saturday, May 6th from 10am to 12pm the Colquitt County Arts Center hosted ART-Olympics, sponsored by Mobley Greenhouse, Inc. Children were invited to come and enjoy different events that combined sports and art and they LOVED it. The events included creating Olympic rings, sculpting an Olympic athlete, designing a distance flier, creating an Olympic medal, balloon dart painting and enjoying Olympic refreshments.
On Saturday, May 20th at 11:30am Moose Moss Farms held a Diving Showcase at the Diving Well and the SW Recreational Pool was open from 10am -12pm. This event was sponsored by the BBQ Pitt and they graciously opened the pool for our community to enjoy a swim!
The last and final event to end our “HomeTown” Teams celebration is the Sports Movie Matinee at the Arts Center. Come join us for an afternoon movie with popcorn and water! This event is sponsored by the Vereen Rehabilitation Center and what better way to celebrate school being out then a Movie Matinee!! Come join us for an afternoon movie with popcorn and coke! The Colquitt County Arts Center will be showing the movie “Slow Moe” on the big screen in our auditorium. “Slow Moe – An awkward teenage boy’s dream comes true when he finds a mysterious pair of glasses that turns him into the greatest baseball player his town has ever seen. He quickly learns that winning doesn’t mean anything if you can’t be proud of how you play the game.”
