Early morning chase ends in fatality
TIFTON, Ga. — An early morning chase ended in a fatality Wednesday, according to Trooper Slade Reid with Georgia State Patrol Post 13.
The male driver, whose name has not been released yet, died after traveling off Union Road and hitting a utility pole around 1 a.m.
The chase started in Worth County when police attempted to pull over the driver of a 2015 Toyota Camry, said Reid.
The driver refused to stop and sped away, eventually coming into Tift County on Highway 82.
“Eventually, they wound up going down Union Road, heading south,” said Reid.
In taking a left curve, the Toyota Camry driver partially left the road, then came back on the road, crossed the middle line and partially left the road on the other side, according to Reid.
The driver then overcorrected, came back across the middle line and left Union Road, said Reid.
Traveling off the road, the driver struck an embankment, went airborne and hit a utility pole near Oakridge Church Road, according to Reid.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, said Reid.
There were no passengers in the Camry at the time of the crash, according to Reid.
The name is being held pending next-of-kin notification.
