LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Come join community choir

The A Cappella choir reunion last October had more than 300 participants. Moultrie has a treasure in the Colquitt County High School choral program and its special history. If you search around the world, you will not readily find its equal. Yes, other towns have choirs, but the history of excellence is not there. I’ve looked.

Partnered with the Moultrie Arts Center, the foremost supporter of all things arts and culture, we are looking to launch the Moultrie Master Chorale. This would be a mixed choir of 50 (or more) singers. We know there are many alumni of the A Cappella choir that would relish a chance to reengage in choral music. But you don’t have to be an alumnus of the A Cappella choir to take part.

Rehearsals would be on Monday nights from 7-9 p.m. in the Arts Center Ball Room and would begin June 3rd. The dates for rehearsal would be June 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and July 1st, 8th, 15th, and the 22nd. The performance would be Saturday, July 27th, at 7 p.m., in a place to be determined. All we ask is that you attend six of the eight rehearsals.

The cost of the summer session is $65 and will help pay for the accompanist, the music and for the additional Albany Symphony musicians.

We will use this concert to honor our veterans and the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Therefore, we will be performing the John Rutter Requiem. It is a 7-movement piece of music written to honor the fallen, and we will end the concert with a selection of patriotic songs.

I have conducted community choirs in Tifton, Valdosta and Albany. With our rich history of choral music, I know we can reach unparalleled heights of excellence. Go to moultriearts.org and click on “Adults,” then click on “Music” and scroll down. Register and join us as we add to the history and the mystique of choral music etched in our community. Tell everyone you know and let’s make this an event to remember.
