Domestic violence shelter receives state certification, funding
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Serenity House, Colquitt County’s domestic violence women and children’s shelter, announced last week that it has received state certification effective July 1.
This coincides with its previously obtained federal certification meaning it’ll now receive state funding. The certification was granted after state officials reviewed Serenity House, ensuring it was up to code, which it was.
Serenity House Executive Director Haley Clark said the shelter welcomes the certification with open arms.
“We are so excited for what this means for our shelter,” she said in a press release. “We are looking forward to continuing to improve our facility, as well as the services we provide in the near future.”
The state is providing Serenity House with $75,000. Clark said the money will fund shelter improvements, including renovations to the bathrooms, flooring, air conditioning and buying a backup generator in case of storms.
“Serenity House has a dedicated team working around the clock to ensure the safety and support of those we serve,” the press release said. “The shelter is a 14-bed facility that provides temporary, emergency shelter to those escaping domestic violence. Additional services provided by Serenity House include advocacy services; case management services; assistance finding sustainable employment; assistance finding safe housing; transportation; temporary protective orders; and much more. The staff members at the shelter work diligently to ensure those who come to us for help leave with the ability of being self-sufficient individuals living in a safe environment according to the press release.”
“Our goal at Serenity House is to help those who reach out to us realize they do not have to go back to an abusive situation,” Clark said.
