THE LATEST: Water main break should be fixed by 7 p.m.

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The water main break near the Veterans Parkway Waffle House is expected to be repaired between 6-7 p.m., according to the City of Moultrie.

City Utilities workers have been attempting to repair the issue since being notified about it at 5:30 a.m.. It was a leak with an unknown cause.

“The cause of the break is unknown, but we believe it could be attributed to defective or damaged material at installation,” the city’s Facebook post on the matter read.

The leak caused low pressure at Waffle House #2067, located at 490 Veterans Parkway N., and flooded its parking lot. It didn’t damage the structural integrity of the building or the parking, but pushed up some asphalt in the area.

Utilities cut off all the valves needed to stop the water flow, which cancelled classes at Colquitt County High School and Southern Regional Technical College for the day.

It also caused the Waffle House to have a “limited water menu” and a closed off parking lot. Because of this it sent customers to the First Avenue Waffle House.

In a call made to Waffle House #2067, an employee said they aren’t sure if it’ll be resuming the full menu directly after repairs are finished. Tomorrow may be another story, however.

Classes at CCHS and SRTC are expected to resume their normal schedule on Friday.

Utilities did have to break asphalt to find the water main break, but the city will be responsible for clean up and reconstruction of any damage it caused attempting to find it.

Utilities Director Elvira Gibson said the city will work with Waffle House for everything else.

1:20 p.m.

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A call about low water pressure led to finding a Waffle House parking lot flooded early Thursday. According to City Utilities, it may be all day before repairs are finished.

Waffle House #2067, located at 490 Veterans Parkway N., called Utilities at 5:30 a.m. reporting low water pressure. Upon arrival, Director Elvira Gibson said, workers found the entire parking lot flooded.

“We’re pretty sure we have a leak on the 12-inch water main that runs in front of this property,” she said. “Right now, we’re trying to isolate it.”

The water hasn’t damaged the structural integrity of the building or its parking lot but did manage to push some asphalt up.

Gibson said Utilities is cutting off all the valves needed to stop the water flow and pumping the water out of the parking lot. Businesses in the area may experience water disruption because of this.

The workers may also need to break some asphalt in the area to find the source.

“We don’t really know the depth of the water line yet. It could be probably six to eight feet, we’re thinking,” she said. “That’ll take time to excavate and then following that we’ll make the repairs and try to put things back together.”

Utilities will clean up any damage workers did while making repairs, but Gibson said they’ll be working with Waffle House for everything else.

The Veterans Parkway Waffle House is still open during repairs but is serving a “limited water menu” since it’s without running water. The staff is suggesting that customers go to the 1900 First Ave. S.E. location until the issue is resolved, however.

The lack of water due to the break caused Southern Regional Technical College to cancel classes Thursday at the Veterans Parkway Campus.

Students were sent home from Colquitt County High School at 10:30 a.m. for the same reason. The Board of Education said students would not be counted absent, and it expects classes to resume Friday on the normal schedule.

9:30 a.m.

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Classes at both the Colquitt County High School and Southern Regional Technical College have been cancelled today (Feb.20).

Due to a broken city water main and the lack of restrooms/proper sanitation, Colquitt County High School will dismiss classes at 10:30 a.m. with bus riders being picked up at that time. Students will not be counted absent. Classes are expected to resume as normal on Friday, said the Board of Education.
