Competing Artists: VSU hosts 2019 student art competition

VALDOSTA – Do not envy Holly Ann Scoggins’ job.

The Polk State College-based artist served as the juror for the 21st Annual All-Media Student Exhibition opening Monday evening, March 25, at Valdosta State University.

Scoggins had to review 225 works submitted by 77 VSU students, said Julie Bowland, VSU fine arts gallery director. Scoggins selected 53 works by 36 student artists for inclusion in the exhibit.

She named first- through fourth-place winners and selected five Maker Art Supply Merit Awards, Bowland said. Awards will be announced during the opening reception.

Bowland said the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration Student Art Acquisition Award continues this year. It will purchase at least one student artwork for $500.

“The participating student artists exhibit a wonderful range of diverse media, styles and artistic outlooks in this annual showcase of emerging talent,” Bowland said. “Interior design, graphic illustration, photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media and fiber art are all included in this exciting multi-media exhibition. This is one of the most eagerly awaited exhibitions as any and all VSU students are eligible to compete and show their art.”

Scoggins “received her bachelor of fine arts in painting and drawing from East Carolina University,” according to a VSU statement. “She received a master of fine arts in figurative art in painting and printmaking from the New York Academy of Art.

“Scoggins also studied at Savannah College of Art and Design, Penland School of Crafts, Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona, Italy, and the Liepzig International Artist program in Germany. Her paintings and prints are included in the permanent collection of the University of Georgia, Chanel Fine Art for Boutiques and the BMW and LIA International Artist Collection.

“Her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally including a solo exhibition at Berkeley Gallery in NYC in 2010, and most recently at Polk Museum of Art in 2018.”

Scoggins is the visual art program director and full-time faculty of fine art, teaching foundations and figurative studies at Polk State College in Winter Haven, Fla.
