Space still available at shelter

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie YMCA opened The Pineland Y last night as a shelter for people during Hurricane Michael.

In a video posted to the City of Moultrie Facebook page about 9:20 a.m. today, Y CEO Rich Gallagher said about 70 people have sought refuge there. He previously said the building’s capacity is 200, so space is available if anyone feels a need today.

The video expressed appreciation for people who have donated items, especially food, for the people who are there, but it says bedding is still needed and asks anyone with blankets, sheets, air mattresses, etc., if they could donate them.

Gallagher says in the video that he has heard that other shelters have opened in response to the pending storm. He said anyone in need of help can contact the city at 985-1974 or the Colquitt County Utilities Department at 668-6000 to be directed to sources of help.

The Pineland Y is located at 710 28th Ave. S.E., the former Pineland School. The city will provide a shuttle service to the shelter from the Ryce Community Center, 305 Seventh Ave. NW.
