Moultrie man charged in ’18 traffic death

THOMASVILLE — A 22-year-old Moultrie man has been charged in the 2018 death of a man struck by a vehicle on U.S. 319 North.

David Newman was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Anthony Houston Massey, 414 Old Albany Road, on Sept. 18, 2018, according to a Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol trooper.

Trooper First Class Micheal Moses said Massey told him he was setting his cruise control when his vehicle struck Newman.

“He looked up and saw (Mr.) Newman. It was too late. He had hit him,” Moses said last year.

On Tuesday, Moses said that following a GSP investigation of the incident, Massey has been charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree.

“He did not intentionally do it,” the trooper said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were found in Massey’s blood.

Susan English, Newman’s sister, a Frankfort, Ky., resident, said it was never determined if her brother was riding a bicycle or walking beside the bike at the time of his death.

Neither was a witness traveling behind Massey able to say if Newman was riding the bicycle.

“She saw something fly up and thought it was a mailbox,” the trooper said.

English said her 42-year-old brother, a Foxcroft Drive resident, was a mechanic.

Massey posted a $1,100 bond and was released from the Thomas County Jail.
