Lady Packers raise record to 7-1

MOULTRIE – With some players missing and facing a top 5 club in the AAA classification, the Colquitt County High boys basketball team fell to Monroe High of Albany 70-59 in the first game held this new season at William Bryant Court last Saturday. The Lady Packers won 68-44 to raise their record to 6-1.

Colquitt County’s girls defeated Bainbridge 68-28 on Tuesday. The boys fell in the second game, 61-55.

The Colquitt boys lost by three when the two schools met in Bainbridge last month. The Lady Pack won 41-28.

Dropping to 3-2 on the season with the loss to Monroe, the Packers of coach Tremaine Facison got 21 points from Dy Williams and 15 from Montavious Ponder. Elijah Scott, one of the team’s top point producers, sat out with an injured ankle.

Facison said the team missed its first eight 3-point attempts and ended up shooting just 21-for-62 from the floor. He said the home team trailed as many as 15, rallied to get within a basket of tying the score three or four times, then commit a costly turnover.

“But we didn’t give up,” the coach said. “They did all I asked.”

In Saturday’s first game, Colquitt and Monroe were tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter.

But the Lady Packers outscored the visitors 17-10 in the second quarter and pulled even further away in the second half.

Colquitt was led by freshman Carliss Johnson, who had a season-high 25 points. She hit four 3-pointers in the game.

Janiah Ellis had 18 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Camille Singletary added 10 points; Audreyanna Roland had seven; Gracie Belle Paulk had six; and Keyana Harper scored two.

Colquitt County played host to Bainbridge on Tuesday.

On Dec. 20-21, Colquitt County boys basketball plays two 1 p.m. starts at Monroe High for the U-Save-It Classic. These games are against Glynn Academy and Statesboro High.

Also on Dec. 20-21, the Colquitt County girls will play in Peach State Holiday Classic and will meet Douglass High in their opener.
