Fishing tournament to benefit child with rare disorder
MOULTRIE, Ga. —The third annual Karison Classic, a fishing tournament to benefit Karison May, who was diagnosed with Joubert Syndrome, is set for April 14 with weigh-in at Larry’s Bait, Tackle and Marine from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
The entry fee is $40 for two angler teams and only fish caught the day of the tournament are eligible for weigh-in.
Amanda Webb, Karison’s mother, said the event will be open to families with plenty of family friendly activities.
A bounce house, face painting, snow cones and various other children’s activities will be available for kids.
Webb said her daughter attends intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy as often as possible.
May to begin walking independently in November of 2018 at the age of three and a half years old, following the therapy sessions.
“Every child is affected differently,” Webb said. “The severity of the syndrome is highly variable among children.”
The family has distributed flyers promoting the event, with a description of Joubert Syndrome on the back.
Joubert Syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition that affects around 1,500 known cases in the entire world, the flyer reads.
The flyer also says there is no cure for the syndrome, only supportive therapies and monitoring of affected organs and body systems.
“You can’t be unhappy around Karison,” Webb said. “I’ve never seen someone with the strength and motivation she has. “
Webb says that even though her daughter has struggles, she smiles through it all.
“She wins the hearts of everybody she meets,” she said.
All proceeds will benefit the May family and they hope to be able to allow their daughter to attend the interview therapy program as often as possible.
The family plans to attend the Joubert Syndrome Conference in Baltimore, Md., in 2019.
