Conservation district sponsors poster, essay contests on soil

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The National Association of Conservation Districts Stewardship and Education Committee is pleased to announce the 2019 Auxiliary Poster Contest and Stewardship Week theme: “Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper.”

The 64th Annual Stewardship Week will take place April 28–May 5, 2019. The poster contest is open for all public, private, and homeschooled students in the second and third grades.

Soil is a dirty topic, but everyone needs to learn that it is the foundation for many of the items we use in our daily life, such as food, clothing, clean water, homes and more, according to a press release from the Middle South Georgia Conservation District.

The poster must be the original work of the student with the theme included on the front side of the poster and the contest entry form placed on the back of the poster. Students are encouraged to participate to inspire, increase awareness, and encourage people to work together to protect natural resources for present and future generations. For more information please visit http://www.nacdnet.org/general-resources/stewardship-and-education-materials/contests/.

The Middle South Georgia Conservation District is offering an annual essay contest that is open to graduating high school seniors from Ben Hill, Brooks, Colquitt, Crisp, Irwin, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties. The theme for this year’s essay is the same as for the poster contest, “Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper.”

The essay must have between 500-1,000 words and be typed, or hand written in ink on one side of the paper. Essays must have a title page as the first page and include the student’s name and home mailing address, email address, and name of school, name of teacher and teacher email.

The district winner will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College sponsored by the Middle South Georgia Conservation District and the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Foundation.

The deadline for both contests is Wednesday, May 1. If you are interested in participating in either contest and would like to obtain more information, including the official rules, please contact Ethan Tanner with the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts at 229-985-6509 ext. 3 or ethan.tanner@gacd.us.
