Man hiding in dumpster tosses microwave at cop, then is Tasered 3 times

DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton man was arrested early Monday morning after throwing a microwave from a dumpster at a Dalton Police Department officer, who used a Taser on him three times then arrested him.

Dennis Shammad Love, 28, 1025 Prince Way, was charged with aggravated assault of an officer, two counts of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of tools for commission of a crime, two counts of felony probation violation and obstruction of officer by threat or violence.

According to an incident report, officer Matias Castillo stopped a silver SUV which was suspected of carrying a suspect in another call to police. During the stop, the report noted that Love avoided eye contact and acted “very nervous.” While Castillo was running the names of the three people in the car, Love said “come get me” and tried to get out of the car. Castillo told him not to get out of the car, and when he did, Castillo tried to handcuff him, but Love began to run. Castillo grabbed Love’s hoodie, but he pulled it off and ran.

Love ran across Lake Street into an apartment complex. Castillo followed before losing Love on Fifth Avenue and got out of his patrol vehicle and searched on foot.

After looking around, Castillo searched a dumpster and saw the red pants of Love, who had tried to cover himself with a bag of garbage and a microwave. Castillo pulled out his gun and drew it on Love, yelling at him to show his hands. While Castillo was trying to get Love out of the dumpster, Love was still holding the microwave and threw it at the officer. The two started fighting with the officer outside of the trash bin and Love inside.

When Love finally got out of the dumpster, Castillo used his Taser on Love, shooting the prongs into his back. But Love was able to get up from the first electric shock. Castillo then used a contact Taser and Love went down, but soon began to try to get back up. Castillo then used the Taser a third time.

Once Love was in custody, a search revealed two bags of marijuana.

Castillo was not injured.
