Mississippi shooting claims man with Moultrie ties
PHILADELPHIA, Miss. — A man with Moultrie ties was one of two people who were shot to death during a robbery attempt last weekend in Philadelphia, Miss.
Jeremy Lee Apperson and Megan Elizabeth Staats died during the incident Saturday at the CEFCO gas station where Staats worked. Another bystander was wounded.
Robert Leon Jackson, 30, who was also wounded, was charged in their deaths.
Police received the call at 5:30 p.m., arriving within minutes and arresting Jackson at a nearby hotel by 5:35 p.m., according to Philadelphia Police Chief Grant Myers.
Myers said Jackson was taken into custody without incident.
During the robbery, Myers said Jackson went into the CEFCO, where he shot Staats, the station’s clerk. He said Jackson left the station and engaged in a shootout in the parking lot with Apperson, a customer, who was defending his wife and child. Apperson was killed.
Bystanders returned fire, injuring Jackson, Myers said. He was treated for the wound at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Jackson also faces charges for the attempted murder of Linell Carter, the attempted murder of Lavon Hampton, the armed robbery of Ryan Johnson, the armed robbery of Lee Anthony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Steven Kilgore, District Attorney for the Eighth Judicial District.
Jackson was denied bond.
Apperson’s wife, Samantha Apperson, is a native of Moultrie, according to her husband’s obituary.
