Suspect charged in deadly beating

MOULTRIE, Ga — A Moultrie man arrested on Saturday in connection with an assault on a 31-year-old man was charged Friday with the man’s death.

Miguel Angel Mares Medina with felony murder in the death of Ramiro “Oscar” Hernandez, whose body was found on Monday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He is being held at the Colquitt County Jail.

On Saturday, a neighbor reported seeing Medina, 37, hit a man she identified as Oscar Hernandez in the face and kick him. Deputies, who had been called to the fight at 699 Sardis Church Road, charged Medina with use of fighting words.

He was released from the jail the same day.

The fighting words charge was dismissed later in the week, when officers charged Medina with battery in connection with the Saturday incident.

While police were on Sardis Church Road on Saturday, the victim, who was identified on Thursday as Ramiro “Oscar” Hernandez, refused medical treatment, the GBI said.

At about 6:33 p.m. Monday Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the same location after neighbors found Hernandez’s body, and that agency called in the GBI to head up the investigation of the slaying.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Hernandez died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Neighbors reported seeing him alive as late as Sunday afternoon.
