Churchgoers report man’s strange behavior

MOULTRIE — On the same day that a church shooting left one dead and seven injured in Tennessee, the behavior of a visitor at a Moultrie area house of worship was bizarre to say the least.

A man who showed up at about 11 a.m. Sunday to Temple Baptist Church, 2138 U.S. Hwy. 319 S., placed three golf clubs on the ground in front of a room. That was strange enough in itself, but it was what witnesses heard him say afterward that was truly strange.

“If Jesus Christ comes to Sunset Country Club today, are you ready for the party?” the witnesses told a Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

The man then walked out of the building, got into a car and drove north on Highway 319.

A church member in the room told police that the man, “seemed to be sweating, but was calm as he laid three golf (clubs) down very carefully at the entrance of (the) room.”

The female church member described the suspect as a white male wearing jeans, a plaid shirt and glasses and with messy, medium-length hair.

Police had not located the man as of Monday afternoon.
