Manning wins world championship of miniature horse association

Fort Worth, Texas — The grandson of a South Georgia woman recently won the World AMHA (American Miniature Horse Association) Youth 8-12 Hi Point Championship, held in Fort Worth, Texas. Evan Manning, 10, of Loganville, Ga., is the grandson of Patricia Manning of Hartsfield and the great-grandson of Ruby Bowermeister of Norman Park. Manning also won the Youth 18 and Under Special Needs Championship in Showmanship. Altogether, he brought home two event World Championship ribbons, three event World Reserve Championship ribbons and 13 different World top 10 event placement ribbons.

 

Mobile Mammography Center to visit Milledgeville

The BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center will be on hand at Milledgeville Mall next month providing free mammogram screenings. The mammography center is a 39-foot-long, state-of-the-art screening center on wheels.  Women age 40 and over with no breast concerns, who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months and have a primary care physician are eligible by calling 855-655-BMMC (2662) to schedule an appointment. After receiving their mammograms, women also can visit the Intimate Apparel area in their Belk stores to receive complimentary bra fittings. All screening exams are performed by Charlotte Radiology’s licensed, female mammography-certified technologists. A board-certified radiologist, specialized in breast imaging will interpret the mammogram. Confidential results will be sent to the patient and her primary care physician. The free screenings will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the local mall. 

 

Abraham Baldwin founder returns to ABAC

TIFTON, Ga. — Living History Interpreter Tim Zacharias will bring Abraham Baldwin to life on Sept. 16 when the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village spotlights its Celebration of Constitution and Citizenship Day. Zacharias will present “Observations by a Founder: Abraham Baldwin’s Thoughts on Citizenship” at the Mercantile at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Baldwin, the namesake for ABAC, was one of two Georgia signers of the United States Constitution. Museum Director Garrett Boone said the entire Museum and Historic Village will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 16, and the Vulcan No. 5 Steam Train will be running. Baldwin and William Few were the only two Georgia signers for the historic document signed by 39 men on Sept. 17, 1787 in Philadelphia.The Constitution is the oldest and with only 4,543 words, the shortest national constitution in existence. At Constitution Day on Sept. 17, the entire country will recognize the 230th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. The son of a blacksmith, Baldwin was born on Nov. 22, 1754 in Guilford, Conn. He enrolled at Yale College at the age of 14 and completed his degree in 1772.  He studied theology and stayed at Yale as a tutor until 1779.  He served on George Washington’s staff as a chaplain during the Revolutionary War.

 

Autumn Artfest reception to be Sunday

LIVE OAK, Fla. — The 2017 Autumn Artfest will be worth the wait when its opening reception and awards ceremony is held Sunday. Originally scheduled for last Sunday, the reception was postponed due to the impending Hurricane Irma. The reception and ceremony will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Suwannee River Regional Library’s Live Oak branch Sunday. It is the 21st Fine Art Exhibition presented by the Live Oak Artists Guild and the Suwannee River Regional Library. The community is invited to attend the ceremony and reception alongside the artists, their guests and the awards sponsors. A total of 14 juried awards will be presented during the ceremony. Following the opening reception, the artwork will be on display through Sept. 22 during regular library hours. 

From Sept. 22-Oct. 6, there will be a “Featured Exhibition” of all the works that receive award recognition.

 

Latino Taste Festival set for Saturday

DALTON, Ga. — The Coalition of Latino Leaders (CLILA) holds its fourth Latino Taste Festival Saturday in downtown Dalton. Come and enjoy traditional authentic Latino food from different regions of Mexico, and other countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The venue will be at the corner of Hamilton and Crawford streets, next to the former Dalton Depot restaurant. Latino food vendors from the community will start serving at noon and they will continue until 8 p.m. You can enjoy traditional music and dances performed by groups from different Latin American countries and regions.

 

Do you ‘Dig it?’ 

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Lowndes County 4-H 10th Annual “Kids Dig It” will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16, at the Lowndes County Civic Center, 2108 E. Hill Ave. This is a family oriented, community – wide event that will showcase interactive exhibits and rides on heavy equipment such as front end loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, fire and rescue equipment, hay ride and more. There will be activities for kids of all ages. Cost of admission is $5 per person (children 2 and under Free). Cost per ride is $1 and concessions will be sold.
