Pair of fourth-quarter scores propel Parkview

TIFTON, Ga. — Parkview’s comeback kids struck Friday night and the Tift County Blue Devils were their victims.

Parkview pulled out a 31-28 victory at Brodie Field, scoring 14 points in the final 4:06 of the game after trailing by 11 points at halftime. It also had to survive a near-miracle from the Blue Devils.

The Panthers scored on a 1-yard run by Malik Washington at 4:06, then added a two-point conversion on a Washington pass to C.J. Daniels, pulling them to 28-25. After recovering an onside kick, the Panthers needed just four plays before C.J. Brown ran the ball in from the 9 at 3:04. An extra point kick attempt went awry, but the visitors led 31-28.

Tift could not move on its next possession and punted the ball back inside three minutes. Parkview was even better shape after two first downs in Devils’ territory, the second after Tift used its final timeout.

But then Tift got an unexpected second chance.

A low snap got away from quarterback Jordan Williams and Tift fell on it at the 36 with 1:09 remaining.

The Blue Devils moved into Parkview territory on pass interference, then drove down to the 28 when quarterback Patrick Felton converted fourth down at 16 seconds. The Panthers batted and nearly intercepted Felton on the next play and with 11 seconds remaining, the Devils opted to try a 45-yard field goal. Rosendo Ramirez’s kick fell short and Parkview knelt on the ball for the victory.

A game that was mostly a second half stalemate was full of twists and turns over its first 24 minutes.

Tift scored on its initial possession, an 83-yard, 11-play drive.

Felton completed his first three passes of the evening and six of seven overall during the series. Tight end Ben Brock was on the receiving end of three of these and when he lowered his shoulder on the third, the 14-yard gain took Tift from the 35 to the 21.

Two plays later, Felton found Tyler Ajiero on the right side of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown at 6:03. Ramirez kicked the first of four extra points for a 7-0 lead.

By the end of the quarter, the Panthers were up 10-7, courtesy of a pair of fumble recoveries.

Kobe Wilson stripped Felton around Tift’s 25 and went in, untouched, at 3:05. Nolan McCord provided the extra point kick. A second Parkview recovery at the 11 saw the Blue Devils defense hold on, with McCord going out at 1:09 for a 27-yard field goal.

There were three lead changes in the second quarter.

Tift struck first on an 80-yard drive filled with runs by Mike Jones. Jones had a 15-yard burst and two more for nine yards. Down at the 11, Felton went to the air again finding Ajiero, but this time on the left side of the field. He scored at 8:15, putting the Devils back on top at 14-10.

Williams used his arm and legs on the ensuing drive, hitting first down passes to Shane Butler and Washington, then running out of danger when the defensive walls caved in on him. An offsides penalty moved the ball to Tift’s six and Parkview struck with a direct snap to Washington, who broke a tackle around the line of scrimmage and scooted over the goal line.

Following McCord’s kick at 4:53, the Panthers were up 17-14.

A kickoff into the end zone meant Tift started from its own 20, but the field position did not last.

Felton immediately ran for 25 yards and a Jones rush moved the ball to midfield. Tift had third-and-6 there and seeing an opportunity, Parkview brought on the pass rush. The Panthers were centimeters from getting their hands on Felton, but he flung the ball deep towards the end zone.

Leaping up to grab that pass was Ajiero, who landed at the 1. Stymied twice at the goal line, Jones bulled in at 1:49, swinging the lead back in Tift’s direction at 21-17.

The half did not end there.

Parkview attempted to pick up some yards with Brown, who after meeting a group of tacklers, had the ball punched out of his arms by Antonio Howard. Kadarius McDaniel fell on the loose pigskin at the 17.

With 1:35 remaining, Tift opted to go to the air. Brock caught another pass for 10 yards and Jameson Turner took a four-yarder down to the 3.

No timeouts remained for the Blue Devils and with seconds ticking away, Felton launched another pass in the direction of Turner. He was well covered, but Felton found his man.

Turner leaped and caught the pass on top of the defender’s helmet. He hung on to it as his feet hit the ground and the incredible catch meant Tift had a 28-17 lead at the break.

Most of the second half was chess-like in nature and a game of field position. Punters were the most active of the players, Ramirez and Cameron Orr of Parkview combining for five boots.

Parkview got rolling on the last effort. Aided by penalties and Williams’ elusiveness, the Panthers reached Tift’s 21 before hitting fourth down. McCord came on for a field goal try, but it was wide.

There were three more punts in the fourth before the Panthers clicked.

Daniels had 38 yards in receptions on a 55-yard drive, Washington punching it in from the 1. Tift nearly tackled him on the conversion try, but he got off a pass to Daniels for the two points.

Parkview then bounced a perfect onside kick and outmuscled Tift for the ball at the 20. Washington had one reception for six yards, but Brown was the strength, pushing through the line for the 9-yard scoring burst at 3:04.

Felton, playing in his first full game this season, was 15-of-29 for an unofficial 185 yards and three touchdowns. He added 45 yards on the ground.

Jones was the night’s leading rusher with 92 yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts. Ajiero had two touchdowns on six catches for 100 yards.

For Parkview, Williams completed 11 of 20 attempts for 152 yards. Brown ran for 86 yards on 14 tries, one for a touchdown. Daniels had 56 receiving yards and Washington had 48.

Tift now has its first bye week of the season. Afterwards, the Devils will travel to Bainbridge.
