Pair celebrate Christmas with gun play
DALTON, Ga. — Roommates who have had a checkered past in the eyes of the law got into more trouble on Christmas Eve when they decided to shoot up their neighborhood.
Augustine Matthew Galvan, 19, and Eric Byron Lee Coffey, 29, both of 126 Greenbay Drive in Dalton, were arrested after both were charged by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with reckless conduct for firing weapons several times over a two-day period. Lee was also charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and Galvan was charged with aggravated assault after one of his blasts hit a neighbor’s house and also went over the head of officers searching a wooded area, authorities said.
“We were familiar with both of them and have had dealings with them in the past,” sheriff’s Capt. Rick Swiney said.
Coffey faced charges of burglary and theft by deception in November of 2011 and felony theft by receiving stolen property and making false statements charges in May of 2010. In November of 2014, Galvan was charged with second degree burglary.
Authorities were called by a resident of the neighborhood near Airport Road on Saturday reporting “numerous” shots being fired around his residence on Saturday and Friday, according to an incident report. The complainant showed deputies where his bathroom window had three bullet holes with the bullets in the ceiling of the room. Deputies could tell the shots had been fired from down the hill from the residence.
While searching the area, deputies found numerous .22 caliber casings and spent shotgun shells at several different locations. Other residents in the area again told authorities the shootings had been going on for the past two days and directed officers to the Greenbay Drive address.
While searching a wooded area behind the address, deputies reported “three or four shotgun blasts” and heard pellets hitting the trees over their heads. Deputies then spread out around the house to secure a perimeter and officers knocked on the front of the house and identified themselves. Lee answered the door and surrendered when officers ordered him to the ground, but Galvan jumped out of a window at the back of the house and was arrested without further incident by the officers surrounding the house. Neither Coffey or Galvan gave a reason why they were firing shots.
Coffey was released on a $2,537.50 cash or property bond on Christmas day, while Galvan is being held in the county jail without bond.
Coffey could not be reached for comment.
