MOULTRIE – Colquitt County High School senior Carter Newman has recently been recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist based on his high Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores.

This is the first time in recent history a CCHS student has been identified as a semi-finalist for this prestigious program, the Colquitt County School District said. According to the National Merit Scholarship program, students are initially selected based on their PSAT scores and then evaluated over time in a selection process, considering their overall academic performance, skills, and accomplishments. Newman would receive a college scholarship if selected as a National Merit Scholar.

Newman’s recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist is no small feat, the school district said. This distinction places him among the top one-third of the 50,000 highest scorers nationwide — an extraordinary achievement highlighting his dedication, intelligence, and potential. His academic excellence is reflected in his impressive GPA of above 4.0. In addition to his rigorous academic schedule, he is a dedicated and active participant in the 50th Regiment Band and CCHS Choral program. His commitment extends beyond the classroom, as he’s also involved in Work-Based Learning, showcasing his desire to gain real-world experience while pursuing his academic goals.

Looking ahead, in February 2025, the next steps in the National Merit process will take place, where students advancing to the final stage will be announced.
