eSports Season 1 kicks off with League of Legends
MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County eSports team has had more than enough time to think about Season 0 and how it ended so close to going to the state championship tournament. Season 1 kicked off earlier this week, and the team was ready to show they are more than just a one-hit wonder as they look to build on last season’s success.
In seven matchups Tuesday, three of the Packer teams won and four lost while playing League of Legends. Some of the teams include new players, and with that comes issues of communication, teamwork and learning the game more.
Coach Ashley Hodge seemed impressed with the groups’ performance and has lofty expectations for them.
“It was very exciting watching them play,” said Hodge. “My students have come a long way and have significantly grown since Season 0. They communicate better, the teamwork is better, and they use League of Legends jargon.
“For my League teams, I am looking forward to seeing the teams progress,” she said. “Now that they have gotten their feet wet with Season 0, they know what they are up against in terms of other teams. I’m really looking forward to the teams progressing and moving further into playoffs. Our goal remains the same, make playoffs and make it to the state championship.”
The biggest issue wasn’t the players, Hodge said; it was getting adjusted to new rules for Season 1. Although the CCHS team plays two different games, an individual player can be involved in only one. For example, if a player is on the League of Legends team he or she can’t participate on the Rocket League team. Another rule change is the time of matchups. In Season 0, students had two matches, one at 4 p.m. and one at 6 p.m. For Season 1, students play the same team twice, and they play them back to back.
Now that the first match is out the way the teams know what needs to be adjusted to get ready for next week’s round, Hodge said. The bigger question is how will the newly formed Rocket League team respond when they debut Thursday.
