Airbnb violates zoning ordinances

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Greater Lowndes Planning Commission will address zoning concerns with Airbnb at its next work session.

Airbnb is a service that enables residents to rent out residential properties for short-term lodging via the Internet. The service operates similar to a bed-and-breakfast.

Airbnb residences in Valdosta are technically in violation of current zoning ordinances, said Matt Martin, Valdosta city planning and zoning administrator.

“I went online and found five of them (in Valdosta),” Martin said.

The GLPC approved recommendations for two zoning cases during its Monday evening meeting.

The City of Lake Park requested that R-P zoning allow 6,000- to 8,000-square-foot lots if “access to public sewer and water are utilized.” The current Lake Park ordinance allows only one-acre lots in R-P zoning.

“This amendment (to the ordinance) would bring the (Lake Park) lot size requirement in line with other cities like Hahira,” said Ariel Godwin, South Georgia Regional Commission senior planner.

The GLPC discussed one zoning request for the City of Valdosta.

Ron Borders requested a conditional-use permit to rent a property on 401 Woodrow Wilson Drive to a personal-care salon.

The Greater Lowndes Planning Commission meets 5:30 p.m., the fourth Monday of every month, at 325 W. Savannah Ave. All meetings are open to the public. It is a recommending body only.

The City of Lake Park will vote on the Lake Park case at its next meeting at the Lake Park City Hall, and the City of Valdosta will vote on the Ron Borders case at its next meeting at Valdosta City Hall. Both meetings are open to the public.
