Hamilton County attorney John McCormick remembered

JASPER — John McCormick, long time county attorney passed away Wednesday, March 22 after suffering a stroke. 

McCormick was a graduate of the University of Florida. He received his law degree from Stetson University College of Law and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1958. 

He served as mayor of White Springs from 1958-1960. 

In 1961, he became Hamilton County Judge and served in that position until December 1972.

McCormick served as Hamilton County’s attorney from 1973 until his death. 

“John McCormick was a wise man,” Commissioner Randy Ogburn said. “He helped many people with legal advice and guidance. Sometimes even at no cost. He always represented the county well and professionally. He was a true gentleman and a great friend.”

Attorney Cliff Adams, who worked alongside McCormick on several county projects, said McCormick will be missed in the community.

“It was an honor to work with him,” Adams said. “He was a mentor and friend to me. I am glad we could work together for the time we did.”

“Mr. John was a well respected County Attorney and I enjoyed the opportunity to work with and along side of him for many years,” said Greg Godwin, Hamilton County Clerk of Court. “My knowledge of how government works and operates is vastly due to the wealth of knowledge that Mr. John had and was always willing to share. He will be greatly missed by all of us!”

Commissioner Beth Burnam said as a new county commissioner, McCormick helped her immensely. 

“Mr. John was a true southern gentleman,” Burnam said. “He was a walking history book about Hamilton County and the state of Florida.”
