Former Moultrian’s book seeks to help a return to faith
MOULTRIE, Ga. — A minister who formerly served in Moultrie has written a book he hopes will help Christians who’ve left the faith find their way back.
J. LeBron McBride, who has also served as senior minister of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rome, Ga., recently published “Coming Back to Faith, which has the subtitle “The Journey from Crisis of Belief toward Healthy Engagement Meditative Signposts from the Christian Year.”
This is McBride’s fifth book, according to a press release, and he has more than 100 published items. A licensed family therapist and ordained minister, he has listened for thousands of hours to people in counseling situations, and the insights he’s found are key to the book.
McBride said millions of people have left Christian churches. He calls them the Christian Alumni, using a term he said was first used by Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong.
“Many have been wounded or disillusioned in some manner by the church, some have left over a change in theological positions, some have left very unhealthy or even cult-like churches, some have become bored or burned out, and some have simply gradually slipped away,” he said. “Some of these dear persons continue to struggle with their faith and have some desire to hang on to or come back to at least parts of their faith history. I am attempting to assist them in this process.”
McBride said his book hangs onto the broad principles, beliefs and values of Christianity without heavy or detailed theology.
As the subtitle implies, the Christian calendar provides themes for the book.
“For examples, the Season of Lent that we are entering at this time of year, provides themes on the call to order our priorities rightly and face our vulnerabilities, the Advent Season provides themes on the virtues brought to us by Christ, and World Communion Sunday provides themes on the importance of diversity and acceptance of each other,” he said.
McBride said his book offers an avenue to begin a journey back toward faith or even toward a deeper faith.
“I am hopeful that this book will encourage and enhance the daily lives of those who read it,” he said. “I think many can come back to faith (with some adjustments — and these are what may make it possible to honestly and authentically come back) and find meaning in the Christian faith again.
