Forum set on transitional housing project for released prisoners
DALTON, Ga. — There will be a public forum on the proposed Oasis of Love transitional housing project on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mack Gaston Community Center in Dalton.
The project would serve men recently released from the faith and character program at Walker State Prison in Rock Spring. The idea is for Oasis of Love to be located at 3320 Rauschenberg Road, on the campus of Kingdom Living Ministries.
In February, the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on the project, which would require the county to grant a special use permit and to rezone the property to transitional housing from rural residential. Several residents made it clear during that hearing they do not want transitional housing for convicted felons in their neighborhood.
Project organizers held a public forum at the church in June.
A second, formal public hearing on the special use permit and rezoning is expected to take place on Monday, Aug. 28, before a joint meeting of the Board of Commissioners and the Dalton-Whitfield Planning Commission. The Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the permit and rezoning in September.
Those who have questions about Oasis of Love or about the forum can call Randell O’Neal at (765) 271-5594 or Pastor Curtis Moore at (706) 271-7727.
