VSU Red Hots, cheerleading win national titles

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Valdosta State dance team, known more commonly to Blazer Nation as “the Red Hots,” delivered another incredible hip hop performance at the 2018 NDA Collegiate National Championship to capture their second national championship in as many years.

Following an eighth-place finish in the jazz category Thursday, the Red Hots regained their composure and bounced back Saturday with the winning hip hop routine.

Valdosta State posted an overall score of 9.611 out of 10.0 to claim the title.

The squad’s title-winning routine was judged on seven different categories, and VSU outscored the opposition in three of the available categories, including uniformity, authenticity, and quality of movement.

The Red Hot’s final score edged out Grand Valley State’s second place score of 9.597, while Lindenwood closed out the top three with a score of 9.526.

The title reflected countless hours of work by the squad and marked the sixth all-time for the team. In addition, the win represented the Red Hot’s third national title in the last ten years.

In addition to the Red Hots’ national championship, the Valdosta State cheerleading squad turned out a stellar showing at the 2018 NCA Collegiate Championship to earn its own national championship last Thursday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Valdosta State posted an overall score of 94.07 for the winning routine. The total edged out the remaining eight competing schools to give VSU their fifth national title — its first since 2013.

The squad’s performance was judged on 18 different categories, and VSU scored perfectly on four of those categories, including tumbling, jumps, 45-second gameday, and collegiate image. Valdosta State’s final score topped Oklahoma Baptist’s 93.73 score, while California State Stanislaus closed out the top three with a score of 93.10.
