4 charged in pair of meth cases

MOULTRIE — Surveillance at a motel and a tip about a drug buy led officers to make traffic stops that netted methamphetamine and drug pipes — and four arrests.

On Friday, police acting on a tip of an upcoming drug transaction outside a Moultrie restaurant on First Avenue Southeast stopped a Chevrolet Trail Blazer. That was the kind of car police were informed about and it contained an occupant with whom they were familiar.

“We had information that Heather (Ray) Bates would be in a black Trail Blazer and that she would be arriving to deliver some meth, and that Heather Bates possibly had a (outstanding) warrant,” said Inv. Jerome Burgess of the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Team. “I confirmed that there were two warrants.”

Officers stopped the Trail Blazer in the rear of the restaurant and saw Bates making movements as if she were trying to give something to the driver. When a police drug dog alerted to the car, police searched it and found a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and ecstasy and items commonly used in consuming meth.

Bates, 23, 195 Ruth St., and another passenger, Rhonda Jean Branch, 45, 220 Hawthorne Drive, were each charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug-related objects. Bates also was charged with possession of ecstasy and the two outstanding probation warrants. One of her probation sentences is related to a previous meth-possession charge, according to police.

“Further charges are pending on Heather Bates,” Burgess said.

The driver was not charged.

On Saturday, while keeping an eye on two motels on First Avenue Southeast, Burgess saw drivers of two cars meet in what appeared to be suspicious circumstances.

“I observed what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction,” he said.

Burgess detained the occupants of one of the cars, a Thomasville couple he suspects were the buyers in the scenario, while the suspected seller sped away from the area.

As he approached he saw Stephanie Burton attempting to hide what turned out to be a glass pipe behind her in the seat of the car. There was suspected meth residue in the pipe, Burgess said.

Stephanie Burton, 41, 103 Pine Lane, Thomasville was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug-related objects. Justin Burton, 30, of the same address, was charged with driving with suspended license third offense.
