New grant to continue YMCA’s health program

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie YMCA has received a one-year grant from Healthcare Georgia Foundation. The $50,500 grant will allow the Moultrie YCMA to continue providing a health program called “Better Choices, Better Health” to help those dealing with long-term health issues to manage their conditions using a variety of self-management tools.

“Better Choices, Better Health” is an evidence-based program developed by researchers at Stanford University, according to a press release from the local YMCA. BCBH is facilitated in a highly interactive workshop format with a small group (10-20 participants), where individuals practice self-management skills that include problem solving, goal setting, handling difficult emotions, healthy eating, physical activity, communication, and medication management.

“In an effort to improve the quality of life for all Colquitt County residents, anyone is welcome to participate in BCBH, especially those who may have difficulty accessing quality healthcare due to several factors including: transportation, being underinsured, age-related issues, finances, or medical conditions. BCBH is designed to be highly portable and workshops can take place in many local areas including churches, senior and community centers, and other convenient locations,” the press release said.
