Frier paces Suwannee in season-opening win

JASPER, Fla. — Carson Frier is a gifted athlete. Not only does the Suwannee High sophomore excel in four varsity sports, she can also play multiple positions on the soccer field.

Frier began Tuesday’s season opener with defense on the mind as the Bulldogs’ starting goalkeeper. By the end of the game, she had emerged as the offensive star.

After moving to the forward position late in the first half, Frier scored three goals in the span of six minutes to help Suwannee defeat Hamilton County 8-0 on a rainy evening at Veterans Stadium.

“It felt really good, but I also had my teammates that helped me score,” Frier said. “They gave me the prettiest passes ever. They made it easy.

“This was one of my better games. I really like to play forward.”

Her first goal came in the 28th minute with an assist from sophomore Jazzmin Pina Ramos. Less than a minute later, Frier received a through ball from Baylor Burch and found the back of the net again to put SHS ahead 5-0.

She completed the hat trick in the 34th minute.

Five players got into the scoring column for the Bulldogs. Burch, Joy Brett, Hayley Gray and Bethany Mabey also contributed goals.

Out of Suwannee’s eight goals, five were assisted.

“I’m really impressed overall,” said SHS coach Sarah Grillo, who was making her coaching debut with the Bulldogs. “The girls worked together as a team. They were not making selfish shots, they were connecting several passes, which is what we needed to do because of the soggy field.”

Brett scored the first goal of the game and also the last. Her goal in the 51st minute ended the game by the mercy rule.

Hamilton County (1-1) goalie Angie Sanchez made 13 saves, which included a diving stop and also two leaping saves.

The Trojans played most of the game without standout Alli Pinello, who exited with an injury.

Pinello scored six goals against Dixie County on Monday in Hamilton’s 8-1 victory.

HCHS coach Mikayla Byrd said she expects Pinello back for Friday’s game at Lafayette.
