‘Baby Doe’ case still under investigation in Greene County

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Local and state authorities are holding out hope that the University of North Texas might be able to help in identifying the sex and race of a body part belonging to a newborn found several weeks ago off Chester Road near the tiny town of White Plains.

Authorities have attempted to determine the infant’s identity in some way or another since a dog discovered a partial leg.

The case referred to as the “Baby Doe Case” or “Chester Road Case,” remains under investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), according to Greene County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Capt. Lee Stancill.

“From what I understand, the University of North Texas in Denton is going to try to do a comparison to see if they can determine the racial origin to see if there are any familial relationships on file with CODIS (a DNA databank) or anything like that,” Stancill said.

Stancill said a number of people had submitted to DNA tests, but have been excluded in the case.

“So, we have made some headway on that particular part of the investigation,” Stancill said.

After the dog brought its owner part of a human leg, local and state law enforcement officers, as well as dozens of volunteers combed over a large area of the county in an attempt to find additional remains.

“We conducted an extensive search of the area, but have never come across any additional remains,” Stancill said.

Stancill called the case a “sad” one in that no one has come forward to tell authorities they gave birth to the baby and what the circumstances were that might have led to the baby’s death.

“We would like to know the answers to those questions, but right now we don’t have those answers,” Stancill said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 706-453-3351 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 706-453-3366. Information may also be shared with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 6 Office in Milledgeville at 478-445-4173.
