Songs & Scraps & Sculpting Fruit

A tribute to The Grand Ole Opry is coming to the stage of the Colquitt County Arts Center. After a vast search of an existing script and score with no results, members of the Arts Center Theater will be creating their own   version of this tribute show.

The idea was brought to the group by Mickey Key who is a talented singer and performer in his own right. After a little brainstorming a starting list of characters and talents have been identified to create what will certainly be an entertaining show!

We are still looking for talent to round out this show so if you play a musical instrument or can sing a good old country song come and join us Thursday night at 7 PM in the auditorium of the Arts Center. Rehearsals will be determined once the show cast is settled. Performances for this show are tentatively scheduled for the first two weekends in August.

Also coming in August is a fabulous new event just for you crafters and artists. The Arts Center will host an Arts & Crafts Shop and Swap on Saturday, August 12th from 10 AM until 5 PM and Sunday, August 13th from 1 PM until 4 PM.

This is a great opportunity to sell, buy or trade slightly used or new arts and crafts supplies which you no longer need. Examples: fabric, stamps, displays, scrapbooking items, card making supplies, sewing supplies, quilting supplies, knitting and crochet items, yarn, painting supplies, easels, frames, silk screening, sculpting equipment, stained glass supplies, pottery wheels, craft books, and the list goes on and on…..

The entrance fee for this event will be a donation of basic craft supplies to a Teacher’s Table.

Teachers will be able  to shop this table to purchase craft supplies for only $2 a bag while supplies last.

Interested individuals can rent a 10 x 10 space for $15 and receive a space with one 6 foot long or round table and 2 chairs. Spaces and tables will be provided on a first come first serve basis.

Arts Center staff  hopes to make this an annual event. As a special perk to new members of our Artists Guild — if  you register to be a member of the guild by July 15th — your space is FREE!

Have you ever been to an event and seen a beautifully carved piece of fruit- watermelon rose or pineapple swan and wondered- “How in the world do they do that?” Well here is your chance to learn how for yourself! Wow your family and friends at the next social gathering with a beautifully carved piece   of fruit. Ty Stutz will be on hand for a 3 part evening workshop June 26th, 27th & 29th beginning at 6 PM each evening to guide you through the basics of fruit carving. $70 + $25 Supply Fee for all 3 classes includes knives needed and fresh seasonal fruit.

If you missed the opening reception this week  for the two exhibits currently on display you really need to come by in the next few weeks and check out the Georgia Artists Exhibit sponsored by Southside Veterinary Clinic and our annual Georgia Artists with Disabilities exhibit. The Georgia Artists Exhibit includes two and three dimensional pieces and was juried by David Foshee of FSU.

Forty-five award-winning pieces of art from disabled artists across Georgia will be on exhibit.

“Georgia Artists with Disabilities continues to be an avenue that allows hundreds of disabled artists to achieve recognition and commercial opportunities for their unique pieces of art,”  said Ann Brooks, GAWD chair. “We’re  proud to be an advocate for the disabled in communities across Georgia and honored to put their art on display every year for the public to see and enjoy.”
