LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sharing memories of Moultrie’s music scene
Dear Editor:
Your Nov.14, 2018 edition of songster “Boudleaux Bryant” requesting stories, factual or just pleasant memories. Biography website also striving for accuracy and fairness, ask potential contributors to contact them with anything to add.
Boudleaux Bryant and Jimmy Bryant both were part of the music scene along with the Mills band.
Brenda Lee was a guest for a period of time around 1951, on WMGA Radio station, Moultrie, Ga, Gene Mills and his band were regular guest musicians on this station.
When Brenda was a guest several times, she sang a little ditty: “I’ve got a pig at home in a pen and corn to feed him on – that’s all the words that I can remember.” Mr. Mill’s introduction – “This little girl is visiting her grandmother here in Moultrie and she has a song for us today.” In a shocking strong, pronounced voice she belted out her little song. She sang a few other songs – but the “pig in the pen” was most memorable.
My encounter with Brenda Lee: In 1973, I had a contract in Atlanta to supply demolition crane and wrecking ball to Haley Wrecking Company, Nashville, Tennessee, owned by Brenda and Mrs. Bruce Purcell. My research revealed them as owners.
My birth 12/9/38, I would have been around 12 years in 1951.
Best of luck in finding other memories.
