Sunset still in striking distance in Pot o’ Gold

MOULTRIE — Although he said his A team played “a little bit ragged,” Sunset Country Club golf professional Bob Windom managed to keep his foursome in contention for a Pot o’ Gold Pro-am championship on Saturday.

Heading into today’s final round, the Sunset foursome of Windom and amateurs Chad Eunice, Brad Eunice and Jon Ladson is 19-under par at 125, tied with five other teams at two shots behind the leaders.

The Glen Arven Country Club team headed up by pro Bill Connally had the day’s best round, a 61 that vaulted it into a tie for first place with Friday’s leader, the Chattahoochee Country Club team led by Don Williams Jr.

The Chattahoochee foursome followed Friday’s 60 with a 63 on Saturday, joining Connally’s group at 123.

Mike Bennett’s Chattanooga Country Club foursome shot a 60 on Saturday and is one shot back at 124.

Tied with Windom’s A team are Chris Dixon’s Kinderlou Forest foursome, Stephen Keppler’s Marietta team, Stan Moore’s Spring Hill group, Jeff Peck’s Carolina Country Club foursome and Allen Thompson’s defending tournament champion Eagle’s Landing.

Windom said his team had a chance for a better round.

“We were eight under after 13,” Windom said. “We cooled off toward the end.”

The best round of the day from the Sunset amateurs was a 71 turned in by Brad Eunice. He has a two-day total of 147.

Chad Eunice, who had a 71 on Friday, had a 73 on Saturday, and is at 144.

Windom is at 145 after Saturday’s 74, which was a full 10 strokes more than his former college teammate Fred Holton turned in.

Holton, the professional at Phenix City, Ala.’s Lakewood Country Club, followed his first-round 69 with a 64 on Saturday and leads low pro division by six strokes over Greg Lee of Chicopee Woods.

Keppler and Glen Herrell of Cairo Country Club are at 141.

Former Sunset player Andy Blanton, now the pro leading the Country Club of Columbus team, had an even-par 72 on Saturday and is at 148.

Blanton’s Columbus team is six shot back of Glen Arven and is tied with three other teams at 129.

David Noll of Chat-tanooga, Tenn., shot the best round among the amateurs on Saturday, a 65 that has him sitting atop the low amateur leaderboard along with Dave Womack.

Womack, playing for defending team champion Eagle’s Landing, followed his first-round 68 with a 67 on Saturday.

The Pot o’ Gold low amateur record is a 203 shot by Windom in 1983.
