Tift, Valdosta win region cross country titles

MOULTRIE — Warner Robins had three of the top four finishers in the Region 1-AAAAA boys cross country championships on Thursday at Packer Park, but Tift County had the region champion and four other runners in the top 12 to claim the region title.

Tift County freshman Hunter Honeycutt won the boys individual title with a time of 16:45.73 to lead the Blue Devils to the title.

The Blue Devils also had Luke Clark in fifth; Christian Neal in seventh; Blake Hightower in ninth and Chris Rockwell in 12th to total 35 points and leave Warner Robins, which had 48 points, in second place.

The Houston County boys were third with 84 points and Colquitt County was fourth with 88.

Colquitt County girls also were fourth as both the Packers and Lady Packers qualified for the Nov. 8 state meet in Carrollton.

Valdosta won the region girls championship with 38 points.

Warner Robins, led by individual champion Caroline Mauldin, was second with 72 points.

Tift County was third with 76 and Colquitt County was fourth with 90.

The top four teams in the region tournament qualify for the state meet.

“We did what we set out to do,” said Colquitt County cross country coach Mell Wier.

“We wanted to qualify for state and we did that.”

The Lady Packers top finisher was Lindsey Causey, who was seventh with a time of 22:02.37.

She was followed by Karlie Brown, who was 14th with a 22:47.80; Carly Banks, 19th, with a 23:37.09; Karla Duque, 23rd, with a 23:54.77; and Morgan Hayes, 27th, with a 24:01.72.

“Carly Banks ran out of her mind today,” Wier said. “She was 2 minutes faster than she had run all season.

“The girls worked together. The really picked each other up.”

Northside’s Elizabeth Lambert was second; Valdosta’s Haley Haltiwanger and Chelsea Walker were third and fourth respectively; Tift’s Kelly Murray was fifth and Warner Robins’ Maggie Dimes was sixth.

In the boys race, Warner Robins place Karl Burkhardt second, Jacob Grubb third and Ryan Dimes fourth.

But the next Demons finisher was Stephen Bassett, who was 15th.

Heath Lamb led the Colquitt County boys with a sixth-place finish and a time of 17:54.72.

Also for the Packers, Carlos Charles was ninth with a 18:03.77; Julio Perez was 14th with a 18:20.27; Craig Dabdoub, 22nd with an 18:40. 35; Jonathan Cauthen, 37th with a 19:36.16.

“The boys didn’t do what I had hoped, but they made it to state,” Wier said, who noted that Joseph Strickland, one of his top six all season was injured and unable to compete on Thursday.

The complete girls team finish was Valdosta, first, 38 points; Warner Robins, second, 72; Tift County, third; 76; Colquitt County, fourth, 90; Northside, fifth, 128; Lowndes, sixth, 132; Houston County, seventh, 142; Coffee, eighth, 225.

Tift County’s boys were first with 35 points; Warner Robins, second, 48; Houston County, third, 84; Colquitt County, fourth, 88; Valdosta, fifth, 128; Northside, sixth, 164; Lowndes, seventh, 174; and Coffee, eighth, 189.

“The Tift boys and Valdosta girls were just really, really strong today,” Wier said.
