Soccer, baseball teams face key contests

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County baseball and soccer teams face key Region 1-AAAAA contests a home tonight, while the tennis team takes a break from the region wars to participate in the Bainbridge Invitational.

The Colquitt County girls tennis team is 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the region and is closing in on nailing down a first- or second-place region finish, which would enable the Lady Packers to play host to a first-round state playoff match. The boys tennis team is 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the region.

The tennis teams will return to region play on Tuesday when they travel to Douglas for their second meetings with Coffee. Colquitt swept the earlier meetings with the Trojans and Lady Trojans.

The Colquitt County boys soccer team has a chance to move into a tie for first place in the region when it plays host to Houston County at 8 tonight at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The Bears are 11-0-1 overall and 6-0 in the region after Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Warner Robins. The only blemish on Houston’s record is a 2-2 tie with Meadowcreek back on Feb. 16. The Bears have outscored their 12 opponents by a combined 48-7 and will bring a 10-game winning streak to Moultrie tonight.

Colquitt’s boys are 8-1 and have won their last three in a row, one on penalty kicks and the last two by 1-0 scores over Thomas County Central and Coffee.

The Packers are 4-1 in the region. Their only loss came on March 7 by a 3-2 score to Tift County at home.

The Packers are led in scoring by Daniel Garcia, who has five goals. Oscar Quintanilla, Salvadore Duque and Matt DeMott each has four goals.

Colquitt has been off since blanking Coffee last Saturday at home.

The Colquitt County girls soccer team also won over Coffee last Saturday as the Lady Packers make a push for a playoff berth.

At 2-3 in the region, Colquitt has some ground to make up, but a victory over the Lady Bears at 6 tonight would be strong step in the right direction.

The Lady Packers have won two in row, but Houston will come in after suffering its first region defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss to Warner Robins on Tuesday.

The Houston girls won their first six matches of the season and were 5-0 in the region before being blanked by the Demonettes.

The Lady Bears, who are 9-3 overall, have outscored their 12 opponents 55-18.

The Lady Packers, 5-2-1 overall, have been hit hard by injuries, but should be in better shape for tonight’s match.

Their leading scorer is sophomore Alba Hernandez, who has 10 goals. Senior Kristin Hall has five and Abbey Taylor has added four. Hernandez and Taylor each scored two and Carly Banks added one when the Lady Packers defeated Coffee 5-1 on Saturday.

Colquitt will be at home on Monday when the Packers and Lady Packers play host to Valdosta.

The Valdosta boys are winless and the school’s girls have just one in the region this year.

Colquitt swept Valdosta on the road on March 2.

The Colquitt County baseball team will try to keep from falling to 0-3 in the region when it plays host to Warner Robins at 7 tonight at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park.

The Demons are 1-1 in the region after a league-opening 2-1 win over Valdosta and a 9-7 loss to crosstown rival Houston County on Tuesday,

A sixth-inning grand slam by Josh Thigpen proved the difference for the Bears, who raised their overall record to 6-2. Warner Robins falls to 3-6 overall.

The Packers, who are coming off a 12-9 loss to Valdosta on Tuesday, are expected to use Matt Weaver and John Michael Harrison on the mound.
