Michie leads tennis teams to titles

Jeri Michie was helping out at a South Walton High School football game last fall when the athletic director approached her about coaching the school’s tennis teams.

Less than a few months after retiring as an educator in the Colquitt County school system and moving to San Destin, she agreed and led the school’s boys and girls tennis teams to region and district championships and a berth in the state tournament.

“It was a great group of kids,” Michie said of her teams.

Of course she was no stranger to tennis, having been an outstanding player at Moultrie High from 1973-1975, winning a region doubles championship.

She also received a scholarship to Georgia Southern, where she played No. 1 as a freshman and performed from 1975-1978.

Michie also coached the junior varsity tennis team at Colquitt County.

Michie’s two sons were fine tennis players at Colquitt County High. Brian Michie will be a senior at the University of Georgia. Bradley Michie will be a sophomore at Georgia Southern.

Her husband Scott Michie, the former principal at Willie J. Williams Middle School, taught science last year and enjoyed it, she said.

Of this and that:

n South Carolina won the 32nd annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match held last week at the Sage Valley Golf and Hunt Club in Graniteville, S.C., but former Colquitt countian Harris English held up his end of the bargain for the Georgia team.

South Carolina won 9 1/2 to 6 1/2, but English, coming off his win in the Georgia Amateur, defeated Stephen Behr of Florence 4 and 3 on Thursday and Martin Summer of Newberry 6 and 4 on Friday.

English is the first player to have won the Georgia Amateur title before competing in the Challenge Match.

n Signups for the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department’s fall baseball and softball programs will run through Friday, July 27. The baseball league is open to boys 7-12, with an age control date of May 1. The softball league is open to girls age 8-10. The age control date is Jan. 1.

The cost is $25. For more information, contact the recreation department at 890-5429.

n Free physicals will be given to all Colquitt County High School and middle school students who intend to play any sport during the 2007-2008 school year.

The physicals will be given at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium at the high school.

Physical forms must be signed by a parent and presented at the time of the physical.

n The seventh annual Georgia/Florida/Alabama Minor League Baseball Reunion will be held Aug. 10-11.

Among the inductees into the 2007 Georgia Class D Hall of Fame this year will be Ken Rhyne, the former Moultrie slugger.

The public can meet with the former players attending the reunion by going to the County Ag Building between 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11.

The meeting room will contain a number of displays focusing on many of the teams that played in Georgia-Florida League and other leagues.

Former Alabama-Florida League and Carolina League umpire David Chafin will be the guest speaker at the annual banquet, which will be held at 5 that night at Embers Restaurant.

For more reunion information, call Clint Chafin at 985-9723.
