JV girls soccer team falls in finals
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity girls run in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament ended with a 6-0 loss to Warner Robins on Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
But this time last week, the odds would have been long that the Lady Packers would still be playing on Thursday night.
Colquitt’s girls were never over .500 all season and took a 2-5-3 record into the tournament.
But in their tournament opener on Saturday, Colquitt rode four Carly Banks goals to a 4-2 victory to eliminate Lowndes.
On Monday in Tifton, the Lady Packers scored three second-half goals to knock off Valdosta 4-1 and advance to Thursday’s championship game, played on their home turf.
But the JV Demonettes scored their first goal 10 minutes into the match and led 4-0 at the half. Warner Robins added two more goals in the second half.
The JV Lady Packers, who did not play Warner Robins during the regular season, finish 4-6-3.
“We were totally thrilled and excited to be here,” said coach Andy Chapura. “I think we surprised a lot of people. I’m proud we made it this far.
“And I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. Even down 4-0 at the half, they never quit.”
The Packers were eliminated from the boys tournament on Monday.
Warner Robins and Houston met in Warner Robins for the boys title. The result was not available.
