Rifle team finishes sixth at state

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County rifle team shot its lowest score of the season on Saturday in the state championships held at Fort Benning and finished in sixth place.

Northside of Columbus won its second straight state championship, shooting a 1,155. Colquitt County, whose previous low score this season was a 1,141, shot a 1,135.

“We came a long way,” said Gunnery Sgt Emmett Bryant, the team’s coach. “We had a good run this year.”

Colquitt County finished second in the state championships last spring, falling to Northside by just two points.

The Packers had been improving in its final two matches, shooting a 1,152 to win the Area 2 championship and a 1,153 to defeat Union Grove in the sectional match and qualify for state.

Amanda Thompson, a junior who is one of three of Saturday’s four shooters who will be back next year, led the team with a 289. Thompson was perfect in the prone position with a 100. She shot a 94 in both the standing and kneeling positions.

Thompson had an outstanding season that included five scores of 290 or better, including a 293 in the area match and a 290 at the sectional match.

Freshman Caitlin Davis turned in the team’s second-best score, a 286. She scored a 99 in the prone position, a 92 in the standing position an 95 in the kneeling position.

Senior Shontae Robinson scored a 283 in her final match for the Packers.

She had a 98 in the prone position, a 96 in the standing position and an 89 in the kneeling position.

Robinson had five scores of 290 or better this season and tied the school record with a 294 in February.

“We are definitely going to miss her,” Bryant said. “Her leadership has been unquestionable.

“She has been a real mentor for the other kids.”

Dori Miller, another first-year shooter who will return next season, had a 277 that included a 100 in the prone position, and an 86 and a 91 in the standing positions. Miller was coming off her two best outings of the season in the area and sectional matches.

Heading into the season, Robinson was the only veteran of the top four who finished second in state in 2006, although it was clear that Thompson would be in the top two this season.
