Goff to headline Region 1-AAAAA media day
MOULTRIE — Former Moultrie High football star and University of Georgia head football coach Ray Goff will be the featured speaker at the first Region 1-AAAAA Football Media Day.
The media event, presented by South Georgia Sports Media, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center in Tifton.
It will be free and open to the public.
“We expect a big crowd as everyone gets ready for another great football season,” said Chris Beckham with South Georgia Sports Media. “We want this to become an annual event, kind of a kickoff to the preseason.”
Goff starred at Moultrie High School before moving on to play quarterback at the University of Georgia. He was named head coach at his alma mater in 1989 and led the Bulldogs for seven seasons.
Goff is now a successful businessman and is involved in construction and the restaurant business.
“We wanted a speaker who really understood the passion of high school football in this area and I don’t think we could’ve found anyone better,” said Render Heard with South Georgia Sports Media.
The coaches of the seven Region 1-AAAAA teams will speak about their 2007 squads.

Of this and that:
n Colquitt County head football coach Tim Cokely has nearly completed the coaches staffs of the varsity, junior varsity, ninth-grade, eighth-grade and seventh-grade teams.
The offensive staff will include Robert Craft, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks; Kevin Giddens, offensive line; Craig Pitts, wide receivers.
Earl Jefferson has been added to coach the running backs and work with Clark Harden and Chad Horne with the B-team.
Scott Chandler will be the varsity’s defensive coordinator. He also will handle the defensive linemen. Tony Long will coach the outside linebackers. Courtney Davenport will work with the inside linebackers and Dextra Polite will again have the defensive backs.
The ninth-grade staff will include head coach Greg Tillery, John Redmond, Daniel Dalton and community coach Steadman Taylor.
Taylor played for Cokely at North Florida Christian School.
The eighth-grade head coach will be Cliff Willis. Andy Chapura will handle the defense.
The seventh-grade head coach will be Tim Kelshaw. Jimmy Whitfield will be an assistant.
New coaches Jonathan Scroggins and Josh Purvis will serve on the middle school staffs, but their final spots have not been determined.
Scroggins is the son of new Cook High coach Jimmy Scroggins.
Purvis worked last year as the varsity baseball team’s pitching coach.
With the varsity football team expected to conduct practices adjacent to the new field house at the high school, the eighth-grade team will practice behind the old field house at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium and the seventh-grade team will practice at C.A. Gray Middle School.
n Cokley said the Packers most highly recruited players this season are defensive lineman Eric Roberts, wide receiver Jarvis Lambright and linebacker Terry McDaniel.
All three already have scholarship offers, Cokely said.
n Colquitt County recently participated in the passing camp at Auburn. The Packers fell to the losers bracket in the competition after the first day, but won all four of their games on the second day.
Cokley said rising junior John Michael Harrison got virtually all of the work at quarterback at the camp.
“We’ve got a young quarterback,” Cokely said. “He played almost the whole way. We wanted to give him as much experience as possible.”
The entire varsity football team will head to Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp on Friday, July 20.
Cokely said 26 teams will be at the camp and will participate in the 7-on-7 passing competitions.
n On assessing the 2007 Packers, Cokely said, “We’ve got a bunch of new guys in a bunch of new positions, but I think, team-wide, we’ll be deeper.”
n The retirement this week of Houston County head football coach Doug Johnson means the Packers will face three teams with new coaches this season.
Cook High, which Colquitt County will play host to in the season-opener on Aug. 31, has hired Jimmy Scroggins to replace George Dean, who is remaining as an assistant coach. Bainbridge has hired Ricky Woods, an ultra-successful coach in Mississippi, to replace Greg Guy.
Johnson is the only coach Houston County has had, taking over the program at its inception in 1991. He led the Bears to a 99-77-1 record.
Johnson, who has ulcerative colitis, said his decision to retire was for health reasons.
A replacement for Johnson is expected to be announced soon.
