Doerun, Berlin to choose mayors in November
DOERUN, Ga. — Two Colquitt County towns will consider a new mayor later this year, while another will have a single city council seat with opposition.
Doerun will hold a special election to fill the seat of the late George Saunders, while Berlin’s incumbent mayor drew opposition. A Moultrie city council seat also has opposition.
Qualifying was held last week in those three towns, as well as in Ellenton, where only incumbents qualified for the open seats. Qualifying in Funston continues through today.
Doerun
Michael Campbell, who has served on Doerun’s city council more than 20 years, qualified for the mayor’s post, as did Larry Brady.
Campbell had to resign his city council seat to qualify to run for mayor, and that seat will also be on the ballot in November. Qualifying for it will be held Sept. 18-22.
Berlin
Incumbent Mayor Mark Bridwell will face opposition from Reggie Merritt in the November election.
Council members Tina Bridwell and Donna Wilson qualified for re-election without opposition.
Moultrie
In the District 1, Post 2, council race, incumbent Susie Magwood-Thomas qualified, as did Cornelius L. Ponder III.
Their race will be the only one with opposition on the city ballot in November. Incumbent councilmembers Daniel L. Dunn (District 2, Post 5) and Wilma L. Hadley (District 3, Post 6) qualified without opposition.
Ellenton
Mayor Audie Perry Sr. and councilmembers Donald Branch and Myrtice Bunn qualified for re-election without opposition.
Unless someone qualifies as a write-in candidate, Ellenton will not have a municipal election in November.
Funston
Funston’s qualifying period began and ends later than other towns in Colquitt County, so residents still have a chance to qualify. So far, only the incumbents have done so.
Up for election this year are city council seats currently represented by Jerry Smith, Bobby Ruis and Dobson Stripling.
Qualifying is held 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. through Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Funston City Hall.
