Concern expressed with gun raffle to city BOE

THOMASVILLE — One resident voiced her concern with a gun raffle to Thomasville City school board members recently.

Rachel Freeman addressed board members regarding the raffle, put on by the Thomasville Dugout Club.

Freeman said she spoke with others about the raffle, which was conducted in the fall, and most were not in favor.

The raffle, Freeman said, sends a negative message.

“It’s sends a big message,” she added of the raffle.

Superintendent Dr. Laine Reichert said tickets, which were sold by parents, were not sold on campus.

“We have no purview of the booster organizations,” Reichert said after the meeting.

City school officials also said background checks are conducted.

Board Chairman Chris Rodd said the topic would be addressed at future city schools committee meeting.

“We’ll certainly take note of that,” he added.

In other business, the Thomasville City Board of Education:

• Approved Dec. 31 financial report.

• Named board member Dr. Hazel Jones as Board of Education delegate assembly representative and Vice-Chairman Kejar Butler as alternate.

• Conducted a closed session and approved personnel recommendations following.
