Memorial Day event planned for South Georgia

VALDOSTA, Ga.  — When people talk about Memorial Day, Lowndes County commissioner Demarcus Marshall said, they mostly talk about it as just another holiday, as just another day off. But to him, it is so much more, he said. “In my opinion, it is a day that addresses the effect of war,” Marshall said. “At the end of the day, any veteran can be one of those veterans in the ground. It’s really important that people understand that war has an impact and how it touches real people.” Monday, May 29, is Memorial Day. Marshall, along with other county and city officials, will be speaking at a memorial service at Sunset Hill Cemetery at 10 a.m. The American Legion Post 13 will be hosting the event. Representatives from Moody Air Force Base will also be attending. According to Ed Kent, assistant department service officer for the American Legion in Georgia, the event is expected to last about an hour. After the ceremony, Kent said attendants are encouraged to walk through the cemetery and pay their respects. The morning before the ceremony, the legion will be sticking short graveside flags next to headstones of all veterans buried at the cemetery. Confederate headstones will also receive flags, Kent said. Anyone can participate by being at Sunset Hill Cemetery Sunday at 8 a.m. Kent said Memorial Day is the one time out of the year that everyone takes the time to remember the ones who lost their lives on the battlefield. “It’s a time when everyone stops what they are doing to remember, and that’s important,” Kent said.
