Bowden heading to Chile to judge Junior Pan American Championships
MOULTRIE – Moultrie’s Camille Akridge Bowden, a former Moss Farms diver, will represent USA Diving as one of its FINA judges at the Junior Pan American Championships.
The meet will be held Aug. 22-25 in Santiago, Chile.
Also representing Moss Farms at the Championships will be diver Carson Tyler.
Bowden returned to Colquitt County in 2012 to open a chiropractic office and served as an assistant to Moss Farms diving coach Ed Goodman.
She served as the interim coach after Goodman left, but realized the job would take too much time from her private practice.
She then obtained certification as an international judge, which allowed her to focus on her practice while also remaining involved in diving.
Over the last three years, she has judged NCAA women’s diving, the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and multiple senior and junior championships.
She also has judged internationally in the Diving World Series in Puerto Rico and Australia.
Bowden continues to meet the high standard of 95 percent accuracy on her evaluations as a judge.
“I look forward to judging on the international stage with this group of junior divers,” she said. “It will be a different experience from the senior-level Olympians I have judged.
“These juniors have the potential to be our future Olympians.”
Including Tyler, 24 divers have been selected to represent the United States in the Pan American Championships.
Divers were selected based on the results at the USA Diving Junior National Championships held July 30-August 6 in Knoxville, Tenn.
Competition in Chile will be conducted in 1-meter, 3-meter and platform in four age groups: Group A (16-18); Group B (14-15), Group C (12-13) and Group D (11-and-under).
Synchronized 3-meter and platform events will be held in combined Group A and B age groups.
While serving as the Moss Farms coach in 2015, Bowden received the Robert “Moose” Moss Award at the YMCA National Diving Championships in Orlando.
The award is presented annually to a coach, athlete or administrator who embodies the values of the YMCA and best encourages the development and growth of the sport of diving.
Bowden started her diving career as a 5-year-old under Moose Moss and had an outstanding career that was shortened by injuries.
