College to present fall play

DALTON, Ga. — Dalton State College’s fall play should fill the audience with hope that kindness and affection can still be found in a world motivated by greed and dishonesty, the director said. “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick is a comedy about a widow who has been left a hefty sum and her grown stepchildren’s efforts to claim that money. It will be performed Wednesday, Nov. 14, through Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 nightly at Southeast Whitfield High School. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at eventbrite.com. The show is free to those with a current Dalton State ID. It is suitable for all ages. The cast includes students, as well as faculty and staff. The play is being performed at Southeast because Gignilliat Memorial Hall, which houses the college’s auditorium, is being renovated for the Wright School of Business.

Abraham Baldwin Jazz Concert set for Nov. 15

TIFTON, Ga. — The mellow sounds of jazz will echo across the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Nov. 15 when the Jazz Combo, the Jazz Ensemble, and the Jazz Choir present their fall concert at 7 p.m. in Howard Auditorium.  The concert is open to the public at no charge. The Jazz Combo kicks off the evening with “Cherokee” and “Tenor Madness.”  The Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Choir combine their talents for “Nice and Easy” and “Moonglow.”  The Jazz Ensemble steps into the spotlight with “Blues to Begin With” and a Miles Davis tune called “Four.” The Jazz Ensemble then reels off “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “One Note Samba,” “Big Dipper,” and the classic from Joe Bishop and Woody Herman, “Woodchopper’s Ball.”  In the grand finale, the Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Choir wrap up the night with “Sway.” Dr. Scott Phillips directs the Jazz Combo and the Jazz Ensemble, and Dr. Susan Kirby Roe directs the Jazz Choir. UWSV seeks ReadingPals volunteers

LAKE CITY, Fla. — Volunteers are needed for United Way of Suwannee Valley’s ReadingPals initiative.

ReadingPals is an early literacy initiative focused on enlisting, training, and engaging volunteer “reading coaches” to increase the number of students who read at grade level by the end of third grade. Volunteers commit to one hour a week for 25 weeks in a local kindergarten setting.

School districts that participate in ReadingPals are Columbia, Hamilton and Suwannee counties. Interested individuals may choose to volunteer at any of these locales.
