Sharks place second in Thomasville swim meet

MOULTRIE — The Moultrie Sharks Swim Team, with a strong performance by its girls contingent, turned in a second-place finish in the Thomasville YMCA Summer Invitational on Saturday. The Sharks, who followed the first-place and invitational host Thomasville YMCA, had 569 total points. The girls had 472 of them, good for second place. The Tifton Tidal Wave Swim Team was third with 404 points and was followed by the Columbia Tiger Sharks, 117 points; Valdosta Aquatics, 93 points; Suwanee High School Swim Team, 63 points; Suwannee Swim Club, 36 points; Bainbridge Barracuda Swim Team, 34 points; and Harris County Tiger Sharks, 11 points. The Thomasville YMCA was first overall with 1,405 points, including 772 by its girls and 633 by its boys. The Tiftarea Tidal Wave was second among the boys teams entered with 194 points and was third among the girls teams. The Sharks were third among the boys teams with 97 points. The Columbia Tiger Sharks were fourth among the six boys teams with 70 points. Several Sharks turned in medal-winning performances on Saturday. Caroline Harrell brought a gold medal back to Moultrie after winning the 15-18 girls 50-yard backstroke. Harrell also finished third in both the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle events and was fourth in 100-yard freestyle. Madison Edmondson also earned a gold medal, in the 13-14 girls 50-yard backstroke. Edmondson also took a bronze medal in the 50-yard freestyle and was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. Emily Chapura earned a pair of silver medals, finishing second in both the 15-18 girls 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke. She also was fifth in the 100-yard individual medley. Ivey Cooper also had a second-place finish in the 15-18 girls 50-yard breaststroke. Case Gregory took a silver medal in the 13-14 boys 50-yard backstroke and was third in 100 individual medley and fourth in the 100 freestyle. Winning bronze medals for the Sharks on Saturday were: • Destiny Avery, 15-18 girls, 50-yard freestyle. • Caroline Chapura, 13-14 girls 100-yard freestyle. • Nora McGill, 9-10 girls, 100 individual medley and 50-yard freestyle. The Sharks are tuning up for the District swim meet.
