MOULTRIE – For Colquitt County High softball – and all of Region 1-7A for that matter – two days that could set a lot of positions for the postseason are here.

Packer head coach Chance Pitts is enjoying the ride of the Packers to a 14-2 record, but he is dreading the literal bus ride Thursday. That’s when Colquitt County plays Camden County High in Kingsland for a doubleheader, and everyone on that diamond will have something to prove.

That won’t be it for Camden this week either, for the Wildcats on Friday are making up the doubleheader at Lowndes High that was postponed last weekend due to Hurricane Dorian’s approach.

“I’m excited to go over there and play (Camden),” said Pitts, whose Packers defeated the Wildcats in a weather-shortened six-inning game 3-2 at Packer Park Aug. 22. Camden was threatening to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but severe conditions not only ended the first game (that was official) early but also called off Game 2.

If the Camden players think they have something to prove to Colquitt, Pitts says the Packers have something to prove as well.

“We have a chance to solidify No. 1 in the region,” said Pitts. “The way we’re pitching and playing defense, you can tell why (I’m excited).”

Right now, Colquitt and Camden are in a virtual tie for first place, Camden being 2-1 off a sweep of Tift County. The Packers are 4-1 having split last week with the Blue Devils.

Pitts made his comments after Tuesday’s 10-2 home win against Thomas County-Central in five innings. It was their second mercy-rule win in as many nights as the Packers topped Cook High in a make-up road game Monday 13-3.

Colquitt scored 10 unanswered runs against the Yellow Jackets, who put two runs up on starting pitcher Jade Horne in their first two turns.

The first-inning run was unearned as Colquitt tried to pick off a runner at third base. On the next pitch, right fielder Emily Allegood caught a ball and fired home to catcher Sarah Harrell completing a double play.

Harrell, in the bottom of the second, led off with a solo home run. The Colquitt bats proceeded to bash more extra-base hits and get multi-hit performances from Allegood, Marlie Wingate, Abby Plymel and Kelsey Patel.

Patel followed the long ball with a double inside the left-field line and scored the tying run when Madison Plymel doubled off the centerfielder’s glove.

Allegood began the third inning crushing a double to left. Wingate singled up the middle, and Allegood scored on Patel’s sacrifice fly for the 3-2 lead.

A. Plymel and Allegood doubled while Abeny Thomas, Wingate and Patel all singled in Colquitt’s six-run fourth. Patel singled in Wingate (who doubled) for the 10th and final run in the fifth.

Horne allowed two hits through her first two frames after which she allowed one other baserunner (via error) in her final two. She turned the second double play of the game in the fourth. Kyla Morris pitched a scoreless fifth.

Morris and Horne each pitched three innings Monday in Adel allowing five hits. Colquitt had 13 hits with four RBI from M. Plymel.

“It’s a marathon,” said Pitts about the season, stealing the line from Tony Kirkland. “You will have a few bumps in the road. The girls responded well (to the losses at Coffee and Tift). It’s special what they’ve done so far.”
