Colquitt EMC offers scholarships

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt EMC is seeking applicants for the cooperative’s annual scholarship program.

Students within Colquitt EMC’s service area are encouraged to apply. The scholarship application became available April 1 at www.colquittemc.com/colquitt-emc-scholarship/. The application deadline is June 15.

“Colquitt EMC is pleased to be able to provide scholarships for these students,” said General Manager Danny Nichols. “We are proud to have the opportunity to support our members in furthering their education and the institutions they choose to attend.”

The scholarship program began after Georgia legislators passed a law allowing electric cooperatives to use unclaimed capital credit refunds for education in the communities they serve. Since Colquitt EMC is a not-for-profit corporation, unclaimed capital credit refunds have in the past been turned over to the state government, but now can be used for local education. This law and the Colquitt EMC Board of Directors enabled Colquitt EMC to implement the Colquitt EMC Scholarship Program in 2006. Since its founding, Colquitt EMC has awarded more than $2.4 million in scholarships.

Eligibility requirements and guidelines include:

● Applicant must reside in the household of a Colquitt EMC member.

● Applicant must be enrolled in a college or technical college with campus locations/degree offerings within Colquitt EMC service area.

● Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.

● Previous scholarship recipients are not eligible.

● All fields of application must be completed.

● A copy of each of the following must be attached with application: High school or college transcript; proof of enrollment for the college you attend or will be attending; and two letters of recommendation

As a not-for-profit consumer-owned electric distribution system, Colquitt EMC serves more than 45,000 members in a seven-county area (Berrien, Brooks, Colquitt, Cook, Lowndes, Tift and Worth counties), with over 67,000 meters and over 8,970 miles of distribution lines.
