Middle school wrestlers fall

MOULTRIE — Despite a pair of pins by Bryce Giddens, the Colquitt County middle schools wrestling team fell to Thomas County Central 31-28 on Wednesday in its final tuneup for Saturday’s South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament.

Also getting points for the middle school Packers on Wednesday in the match at the Pineland gymnasium were Blake Powell and Travis Register, each of whom had a pin, and Anderson Glenn, who won by a technical decision.

The Packers, who did not wrestle as scheduled last Saturday in Bainbridge, will have two days to get ready for the conference tournament, which will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lowndes Middle School.

Col-quitt County coach Travis Torbert said his team has been aiming at the tournament.

“Hopefully, we’re there,” he said.

Torbert said Giddens has the best chance of winning his weight class.

Others who could do well in the tournament are Glenn, Jacob Hall and Jesse Goff, Torbert said.

“They could do well, but it’s going to be tough,” Torbert said.

The team is expected to take 17 or 18 wrestlers.

“The others are going to have to wrestle better than they have been to have a chance,” Torbert said.
