Middle school wrestlers win two titles

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle schools wrestling team won two individual championships on Saturday at the Tomcat Invitational held at Valdosta Middle School.

The middle school Packers also had a second-place finish in the tournament.

“We had three in the finals and won two of them,” said Travis Torbert, the Colquitt County middle school wrestling coach said. “We did OK.”

The tournament drew 11 middle school teams.

Zach Cannon, wrestling at 205 pounds, had an impressive tournament.

He won all three of his matches to take first place in his weight class.

Cannon is still undefeated this season, now sporting a 7-0 record, Torbert said.

Chris Walsh needed just two pins to win at 250 pounds. With the pins, Walsh raises his record to 11-0, Torbert said.

Jacob Hall, 73 pounds, won two of his three matches and finished in second place.

Carlton Brooks, at 205 pounds, finished in third place, also winning two matches and dropping one.

Blake Powell, at 79 pounds, won two of his four matches in the tournament.

Dalton Murfin at 86 pounds, and Beau Weathers, at 128, also split four matches.

Myles Thompson, at 128; Chris Mitchell, at 86; and Tyler Dismuke, at 114, also won one match and lost two in the tournament.

The middle school wrestlers will be off until Tuesday, Jan. 3,when they will travel to Fitzgerald to take on Fitzgerald, Turner County and Irwin County beginning at 4 p.m.

The middle-schoolers will be back at the Pineland gymnasium to meet Hahira and Coffee at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The Colquitt County High varsity wrestling team will hit the mats again on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Tift County to take on the Blue Devils and Houston County.
