Seventh-graders sweep Hahira

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County seventh-grade girls basketball team scored just three points in the first half of its game against Hahira on Friday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium and it looked as it would be a long afternoon for the baby Lady Packers.

But with her team trailing 11-3, Bria Wallace took over the game in the second half, scoring the first nine points of the third quarter and 17 in the final two quarters to lead the Lady Packers to a 26-20 victory.

Wallace, who was held without a field goal in the first half, had eight in the second and hit 4-of-10 from the free throw line as the Lady Packers defeated Hahira for the second time this season. Colquitt County won 33-26 in Hahira back on Nov. 29.

The Colquitt County seventh-grade boys needed no such second-half heroics and cruised past the Vikings 33-16.

Wallace got her first basket of the game just 18 seconds into the second half. She hit two more baskets and a free throw before getting another basket with 3:46 left in the quarter that gave Colquitt County its first lead at 12-11. Hahira managed just nine second half points.

Wallace had 20 of her team’s 26 points. Megan May had four points and Kenisha Seay added two more on her first basket of the season.

The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 5-3.

The Hahira boys had a 6-4 lead with 1:52 left in the first quarter, but Colquitt County scored the next 12 points to take a 16-6 halftime lead.

Hahira managed just two points in the third quarter and fell to the youngest Packers for the second time this season.

The Packers, who substituted liberally in the game, raised their record to 6-2 on the season. Colquitt defeated Hahira 43-14 on the road in November.

Nine Packers scored in the game, led by Quan Daniels, who had 10 points. Cornelius James added six; Trey DeBruce and Walter Johnson each had four; Rashan Hunt, Kontravian White, Xavier Ward and Trey Scott each had two; and Kyle Tolbert added a free throw.

The seventh-graders will be back at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium at 4 p.m. Monday to meet Tift County in games originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13.
